Local Keyword Research Basics
Local keyword research helps you understand what your customers search for when they need your services. The goal is simple: find the phrases people in your area use so you can include them naturally in your website and Google Business Profile.
What are local keywords?
Local keywords include your service + your location. These are the phrases customers type when they’re ready to hire someone.
Examples:
- “electrician in Somers CT”
- “massage therapist near me”
- “web designer in Connecticut”
- “lawn care services Enfield CT”
How to find local keywords
1. Start with what customers already ask for
Think about the exact phrases customers use when they call or email you.
2. Use Google autocomplete
Type your service into Google and see what suggestions appear.
3. Check Google Maps
Search for your service in Maps and look at competitor listings.
4. Look at “People Also Ask”
These questions often reveal keyword opportunities.
5. Review competitor websites
Competitors often reveal the exact keywords they’re targeting.
How many keywords do you need?

- 3–5 primary keywords
- 5–10 secondary keywords
